Sewing the Seeds (of Innovation)

Dan Keldsen interviewing Dr. Alex Pattakos and Elaine Dundon, of The Innovation Group based out of Sante Fe, New Mexico (www.SeedsOfInnovation.com and www.SeedsOfMeaning.com).

Does your organization, or for that matter, you, have fertile ground to plant the seeds of Innovation? Is it possible to innovate in the public sector? (hint, yes!) How does the drive to meet quarterly numbers drive out, or possibly, foster, innovation in a publicly held company? What is the process or processes that support sustainable innovation, and how can you find the beginning thread within your organization to fully embed innovation in yourself and your organization?

The organizational development, marketing, business and psychiatric backgrounds that Alex and Elaine bring to this discussion are well worth your time.

As comes up in nearly every conversation, every blog entry, or any other output you may see or hear from me, there is *absolutely* more to innovation than simply slapping a label on a product or company and stating a claim to innovation. Learn how to begin - the conversation starts now!

Enterprise Search Grows Up

Search has been around for a long time (particularly text-based
search, which is NOT the only search game in town folks!), and while
much of the buzz these days is about tags, folksonomies, and Invisible
Crowds (see prior podcast with Jack Jia), search technology in and of
itself is experiencing a revolution! The revolution brings usability
across the board, to users, to administrators, and to content managers
looking to get the most bang out of the content as they can.

In this interview with Raul Valdes-Perez, CEO and Co-founder
(http://searchdoneright.com/author/valdes) of Vivisimo
(http://www.vivisimo.com/), we discuss what Vivisimo has been
targeting to push Enterprise Search through it's next growth spurt. We
hit a number of topics that are my hot button topics - as a former
hands-on IT guy, while I was happy to have usability figure heavily
for end-users, inevitably any user interface for the administrators
and implementors were the worst interfaces you've ever laid eyes on.
Just because someone in IT is comfortable typing commands into a
terminal, that doesn't mean that's their PREFERRED way of working.
Anything that software companies can do to speed up time to deploy,
time to maintain, and time to extend integration (think federated
search - which we discuss here), and FINALLY Enterprise Search Grows
Up!

I would love to hear your feedback on using Enterprise Search tools,
from either the user or administrator point of view, and whether you
are getting the flexibility you would like out of your search
solution. Comment on the blog (www.BizTechTalk.com), or call in to my
caller hotline at 781-268-0716 and leave a message for me!

Powering The Long Tail with Invisible Crowds

When do communities become crowds? When do crowds become mobs? What makes any of these smart or dumb, loud or silent, useful or painful?

What is "The Long Tail" (www.longtail.com - blog for the book by Chris Anderson) and how is it changing the way people find information and interact with it? Is you website built for people to "bowl alone" or for the Invisible Crowds scampering about, to help each other by exposing the information/products they've successfully found?

Emergent behavior and automatically adapting systems are clearly changing the way that search and navigation can and will be done - and the revolution is at hand!

Mind Mapping Tips from A Master

This interview been myself, Dan Keldsen, and Phil Chambers, Founder and Managing Director of Learning Technologies Ltd (www.learning-tech.co.uk), and current reigning World Mind Mapping Champion, centers around how to get started in Mind Mapping, as well as what the typical stumbling blocks are to successfully *doing* Mind Mapping.

Rather than talk about this in the abstract, I am using myself as a guinea pig to discuss common pitfalls (which I've run into myself - glad to hear I'm not alone), the science behind the techniques of Mind Mapping (good to get a reminder that this isn't just "random stuff" that Tony Buzan had come up with), and much more.

We're all in this together, so as always, I invite all listeners to participate in the discussion, either by posting a comment or throwing a trackback from your blog to this blog (www.BizTechTalk.com), or be leaving me a voice message at my call-in number of 781-268-0716 and leave me a message regarding this post. Any interesting comments I get I will post to the blog (unless you prefer not to get your 15 megabytes of fame).

NOTE: There is a limit of 2 minutes per recording, so you will need to be somewhat brief. Brevity is the soul of wit - and a key to Mind Mapping, so consider it good exercise!

The Motivation for Innovation

This session on The Motivation for Innovation is an interview with Jeffrey Phillips from OVO Innovation (http://www.ovoinnovation.com)/. Jeffrey is the VP of Marketing and a Lead Consultant with OVO, and he also runs the blog Innovate on Purpose (http://innovateonpurpose.blogspot.com), where he covers Innovation from a wide variety of angles.

What drives people and organizations to pursue Innovation? What is Innovation? How do you tell if your company can initiate and sustain Innovation? This 23 minute interview with covers a range of ways to peel the onion around Innovation to identify whether you are ripe to take the Innovation ball and run with it (play with it?) in your organization. And if not, how to jolt the system and make progress in providing The Motivation for Innovation in your organization.

Intel: Global Collaboration and Teaming in 3D (ii2007 tease)

How is Second Life impacting the next generation of personal and team-based 3D workspaces? How are electronic healthcare records being augmented to make more intelligent and interactive systems for doctors and healthcare providers? Have the lessons of Edward Tufte (the information presentation guru that EVERY system designer should know about) penetrated into enterprise solutions?

This 7 minute glimpse into the presentation that Cindy Pickering, a Principal Engineer from Intel will be presenting at Innovation Insights 2007 (www.ii2007.com), between April 23-25, 2007 at the Wigwam Resort in Arizona.

It is rumored that Cindy will be able to show a live demonstration of the 3D workspace environment she describes in this brief interview...

Do you want to see the future of virtual workspaces before your colleagues even know about it? Come to Cindy's presentation, and get a glimpse directly!

Mindmapping and Getting Things Done

Mindmapping and Getting Things Done - For this session, I'm continuing my discussions around MindMapping, and am speaking with Michael Schroetter, Solution Platform Product Manager at Mindjet (www.mindjet.com), makers of MindManager, a mindmapping package for Macintosh or Windows platforms, and who also runs the Mindjet Labs (www.mindjetlabs.com), and with Rich Love, Senior Director of Quality Systems at Stiefel (www.stiefel.com) a Pharmaceutical company - who is a user of MindManager. As you may guess from the title, we will be discussing Getting Things Done, both the concept as espoused by David Allen in his book Getting Things Done (or GTD as many know it), but also other applications of MindMapping, such as in doing research, manipulating Google search results, managing projects, designing databases, agile development, and so on.

Taumed is a consumer-oriented medical information platform embracing many Web 2.0 concepts and using quite advanced search techniques to fully leverage the knowledgebase of 'professional' and user-generated content to help people be more fully informed *before* walking in or talking on the phone to their healthcare providers. This was recorded in a public area, so you will hear some background conversational murmuring - the thrill of lobby-based recording!
The Principle of Perfection

The Principle of Perfection - an interview Matthew E. May, author of "The Elegant Solution: Toyota's Formula for Masting Innovation" - we discuss many topics surrounding innovation, Matthew's experiences in working with Toyota over an 8 year period, the idea of continuous innovation and continuous improvement (here goes the BIG I Innovation and small i innovation discussion again!). Defining perfection, differences between perfection in the East (Japan in particular) versus West, Toyota's pursuit of perfection coming from an initial infection by an American (Deming), and many other intriguing discussion points!

Questions, comments? Please feel free to post to the blog - www.biztechtalk.com, and we'll see about continuing and deepening the conversation. What are you and your organization doing to systematically improve your innovation capability? Let's discuss it here, or feel free to call 781-268-0716 and leave me a message regarding this post. Any interesting comments I get I will post to the blog (unless you prefer not to get your 15 megabytes of fame). NOTE: There is a limit of 2 minutes per recording, so you will need to be somewhat brief. Have your caffeine fix in advance of the call ;).

An interview with Dr. Ellen Domb of the PQR Group (www.trizpqrgroup.com) and also Editor of the TRIZ Journal (www.triz-journal.com) - in this session, we discuss some more of the background theory of TRIZ and it's classical origins, but also it's more modern ties into business and management concerns, self-correcting code and the world of Extreme Programming (XP), and a fair romp across a number of topics - all wrapped around TRIZ (The Russian Theory of Inventive Problem Solving). This is the third podcast I have produced on TRIZ at this point, so keep an eye out for past episodes if this is of interest!

Enterprise Risk Management and the Value of Risk

"Enterprise Risk Management and the Value of Risk" - Interviewing Caoimhe Lynch - Director of Strategy for Qumas (www.qumas.com) - in this interview, Caoimhe and I discuss a wide range of topics, comparing the savvy and experience of financial services' organizations (for risk management) with the same in life sciences (for compliance management), and the idea of 'closed-loop' compliance and risk management, which (for me at least), has kicked off some more ideas in the innovation management world, which I'm going to unleash in the near future. Caoimhe's background in e-Learning from a past life proved an interesting tangent that I believe we fully weaved back into the story - and as I'd said in the Clark Aldrich podcast several weeks back, there is definitely new interest brewing in e-Learning again, and in integration into other systems for 'just-in-time' learning. As always, I am very interested in your thoughts (yes you, the readers and listeners) on these topics, or anything else that I have written or podcasted on. Comment here, give me a call, trackback from your own blog - let's have a conversation!
